Painting the Still-Life: Glass, Wine and Gold
Part I

The above photo shows the still-life I will observe during Part I and Part II of this course.

What People Are Saying about Their Online Learning Experience

Tim is an incredibly competent and well organised teacher, with a vast knowledge that he is happy to share. The learning experience at The Painting and Drawing Art School of Rome was invaluable and life changing and I am incredibly grateful that my love of painting has been reignited, thanks to what Tim has taught me.

It was also a wonderful experience to be able to share the classes with students from all over the world and to be explained in both Italian and English, this added an extra international feel to the classes.( definitely the closest experience to travelling during the pandemic!)
Tim has a wonderful sense of humor and is able to not only encourage but show genuine concern for all his students and their abilities, which made the classes friendly, enjoyable and welcoming.

Thank you Tim for your special skills, techniques, generosity and for your planning and time and for making the classes possible.

I enjoyed learning with Tim how to draw a live model from the very beginning then painting in stages step by step in a friendly and calm atmosphere.  It was very helpful to learn how to improve my work through several sessions of constructive critiques.

I really appreciate how Tim was answering all our enquiries and doubts patiently and taking from his time. Really it was such a productive course which I enjoyed very much.

‘Drawing’ is fundamental to Tim’s approach, in working from life, whether using paint, pencil or charcoal. Tim teaches by example and it is reassuring to see him constantly improving his own work, being prepared to make changes in the drawing, at all stages of a painting.

Tim encourages individuals to develop their own style,  whilst observing the fundamental  rules of creating form and light; it is so satisfying when you see things starting to work. Added to that, Tim focuses our attention on the importance of achieving a unified whole and selectively using contrast in the detail.  Lessons are punctuated by joyful exclamations of discovery, as a glaze turns a colour into a temperature and gives life to form.

It has been amazing to see the transformation in all of our work, over the course of the programme and a privilege to work under the shadow of somebody so accomplished. I couldn’t recommend Tim more highly.

Grazie Tim, maestro appassionato e appassionante.

A very enjoyable experience with Tim! He is a highly skilled artist teacher who has an effective method of teaching. I just finished up the an on-line oil-painting class which was fun, entertaining and very instructive. Tim has the right manner to critique your paintings in order for you to improve your skills each week. It’s also nice to be studying with other art students around the world which enriches the experience.

I am very happy to have found Tim in Rome, teaching his lessons in both Italian and English he brings you back into another period to learn the techniques, secrets and methods of the old masters. I recommend these classes with Tim if you are willing to put the time and commitment in, you will certainly improve your craft.

PADASOR’s (the Painting and Drawing Art Studio of Rome) art classes are now available on line via Zoom.  Thank god for modern technology!  I can now rejoin my favourite art classes live from Rome, in my studio here in Melbourne, Australia.

Tim’s amazing ability to conduct classes in both Italian and English means no one misses out on information.  The classes are also recorded so you can go back and refresh on techniques.  It’s a wonderful group of students with varying levels of competencies.  Rome’s morning classes are my evening classes and I highly recommend joining.

You’ll be amazed what you’ll produce under Tim’s tutorials, and best of all, it’s great fun.

Non pensavo fosse possibile avere risultati così evidenti, frequentando un corso di pittura on line. Ma Tim è stato in grado di trasmetterci passione e validi insegnamenti, documentando passo passo le nostre evoluzioni. Grazie, Tim.

Grazie.

How Does It Work?

First and most importantly: this is Part I of a two-part course.  In Part I we will focus on the drawing, values and color temperature of the underpainting.  Part II will start in mid-January, will also last four weeks, and will focus on the overpainting, the management of local color and the refinement of textures and details.

NB: registration and payment for Part I does not include Part II.  The cost and total number of learning hours  for Part II will will be the same as Part I.

Overview

There are two sessions a week, one in the evening (the Blue Group) and one in the morning (the Orange Group).  Both groups will have access to the recorded session of the other, meaning each week you will have one live session via Zoom and one recorded lesson.

For example, if you elect to join the Blue Group, you will participate in a live Zoom session on Monday evening and then have access to a recording of the Orange Group session that will take place on Thursday.  If you join the Orange Group, you will have access first to the recorded session with the Blue Group and then you will participate in a live Zoom session on Thursday morning.

During the live sessions, I work from the still-life, and will continue the process in chronology from one session to the next.

During the course there will be four live critiques, one at the end of each week.

Your options during the course are:

  1. Work from your own still-life at home.
  2. Use a high resolution image of the still-life that I am working from.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

If you aren’t interested in taking another course, but have taken one before and you would like to continue to get feedback, you can know sign up only for the critiques.

Depending upon which schedule you choose (morning or evening), the full schedule is presented on the right (or below, if you are on your smart phone or tablet).

Please review the dates and times carefully.  In particular, the times have changed since the last course in order to better serve people in time zones all over the world.

Conditions & Requirements for All Courses

  1. All lessons are conducted via Zoom, therefore you must have a computer or a tablet to connect.  (You could use your smart phone to do this, but I don’t think that is ideal.)
  2. You will need to procure all of the materials (see details under “Materials”).
  3. I strongly recommend you invest in the materials I specify, especially the paints.  If that’s not possible, we’ll manage.
  4. If you don’t have paints, you can elect to draw with either pencil or charcoal.

A Philosophical Note from Your Teacher

Teaching painting online has been a necessity and a revelation.  How fortunate we are to live in an age where the technology is advanced enough to enable dynamic interaction.  More importantly, how pleased I have been to discover that this format—with live discussions, recorded demos and photos of student progress—facilitates a thorough and effective learning environment.

Wherever you are in the world, I hope you will consider joining me.

Timothy J. Allen

How it Works

If you would like to continue to receive feedback on works in progress from previous courses, you can sign up to join the group critiques on Friday (either morning or evening) or you can also book a private critique.

If you sign up for the group critiques, please refer to the dates and times listed for the Friday critiques in the either the Morning or Evening schedule.

If you book time for a private critique, I will contact you to arrange a date and time.

Important note: group and private critiques are limited to students that have already taken an online class with me.

If the Still-Life course sells out in either section, then I will add an additional 7 minutes to the critique time for each additional participant  and those opting only for the critiques will come at the end of the normal schedule.

Materials

Oil Paints

I use only Michael Harding paints.  If you don’t have them and/or can’t get them, use what you can get.

Note: this is not acrylic painting, so acrylic paints are not an acceptable substitute.

  • Cremnitz White or Warm White or Titanium White
  • Ivory Black
  • Raw Umber
  • Raw Sienna
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Lead-Tin Yellow (very expensive) or Naples Yellow Light (less expensive)
  • Vermilion or Cadmium Red Light or similar
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cobalt Blue or French Ultramarine Blue or Ultramarine Blue
  • Terre Verte

Brushes

Try and have an assortment of hog bristle, synthetics and sables of various shapes—flats, filberts and rounds—and various sizes.  Small sables are good to have when it is time for precise drawing and details.

If you can, get a brush set.  For example, on Jackson’s Art website they have a set of Black Hog bristle brushes and Pro Arte synthetics.

Medium

First you need the oil and the solvent.

For oil, you can use regular linseed oil or walnut oil.

For solvent, I recommend the odorless, non-toxic kind.  I use either ‘Tintorsetto’ (which I get at the Rome art shop) or ‘Shelsol-T’ (which I order from Kremer).

Get three ‘jam jars’ and mix the following mediums:

  • Lean Medium: 75% solvent + 25% Linseed Oil
  • Medium Medium: 50% solvent + 50% Linseed Oil
  • Fat Medium: 25% solvent + 75 % Linseed Oil

When I do this, I use a double-boiler to heat the medium for about 15 minutes.  If you don’t have that, don’t worry.  Mix the property quantities, then shake thoroughly.

Other Materials: Canvas, Easel, etc.

The size of the canvas should easily accommodate the size of the still-life.  For the Glass, Wine & Gold still-life I’ll probably use a canvas that is close to 60 x 40 cm.

You’ll also need:

  • A palette
  • Palette knife
  • Rags, paper towel, wet wipes
