I'm pleased to present "Masha, the Middle Sister (Portrait of the Roman Actress Laura Garofoli)", oil on canvas, 2020.

First, I must give credit where credit is due: I showed Laura the painting and asked if she had any thoughts on a title, e.g., if it reminded her of any particular theatrical character from the realm of Shakespeare, etc.

She said, "not Shakespeare, but Chekov," and suggested the name Masha from his play "Three Sisters".

Perfect. Thank you, Laura!

Second, this painting is the completion of the painting I began while teaching the first edition of my "Caravaggio & Cabinet Making" class. (The second edition was sadly interrupted by the pandemic.)

The courses I am presently running online are focused on still-lifes (though some are doing self-portraits and master copies), but I am exploring ways to conduct a portrait class online which I'll probably begin in June.

If you are interested and have suggestions, please leave a comment below, else be sure to follow this page for updates OR sign up to our mailing list:

Many thanks for your input!

Who could have ever imagined we'd be where we are here and now?

The good news: necessity has spawned extraordinary innovation. Over the past two months I've had to transmogrify all of my teaching efforts into an online environment, bringing with me all of my Painting & Drawing Art Studio of Rome students, my private students and my university students.

The results have surpassed expectations.

In light of this, I'm happy to present two online courses that will begin Monday, May 11th, 2020 and will run for four weeks: one will meet three times a week, Monday, Wednesday, Friday in the morning from 10:00 to 11:30 Rome time (GMT+1), the other in the evening, on the same days, from 17:30 to 19:00 Rome time (GMT+1).

This means that, wherever you are in the world, there is a good chance you can join me!

Unlike many of the 'painting classes' currently found on the web, this is NOT a collection of recorded videos––this is an interactive experience: you will be with me live via Zoom, will watch live demonstrations, can ask me questions while during the lessons, and receive critiques from me regarding your progress at the end of each week.

I am very excited about this. Please register sooner rather than later. Space is limited.

I hope to see you in studio!

Here is a look at how I would continue to build an underpainting with a limited palette. (Very similar to what we are presently doing in the online still-life course.) ... See MoreSee Less

PS I've realized that the Facebook version of this in terms of quality isn't great. Better the version on YouTube if you want higher resolution: youtu.be/sAp-c33OKmE

I've just learned the the Brera Pinacoteca has made available 'hyper definition' images of many painting in their collection. If you are looking for master works to copy, this is an excellent resource:
