Drawing and Painting the Cast from Life
Overview
Curriculum
In Color
Part 1. Drawing
Part 1 begins with an emphasis on linear and non-linear (massing) approaches to drawing, with an emphasis on the latter. (The drawing phase will begin directly with oil paint.) We will also discuss differences between sight-size and comparative measurements.
Part 2: Color Theory/Form
Part 2 begins with a discussion on color and its relationship to form, examining differences in palettes and light sources, with a focus on a bringing a three-dimensional quality to the work.
Part 3: Finishing
In Part 3 we will continue to develop our painting while also examining what makes a finished painting and how to achieve a specific level of finish.
It is recommended that students participating in this course arrive at least 10-15 minutes early each session before beginning. This way we have enough time to prepare our palletes and can utilize the rest of the time we have to work.

Part 1: Placement / designing shapes
The first part of this course will begin by establishing the overall height and width of our cast using basic principles of architectural drawing, sight size and comparativemeasurements.
Part 2: Block in and construct
In part two of this course we will arrive at the two dimensional stage of our painting, dividing the shadows from the lights by using basic shapes and begin constructing the form establishing specific planes.
Part 3: Defining and articulating
By the third stage of this process, our painting will be well on its way to being finished. In this stage, we will focus again on shape design, paying attention to how our shapes are in relationship to the over all structure of our cast then defining and articulating them further.
Part 4: Rendering and finessing
Lastly, becoming more specific with subtle value shifts and turning the form. Finally bringing our painting to a finish.
