After last semester’s focus on portrait painting ‘alla prima’, with a new portrait painted nearly every weekend, we’ll go back to spending the entire time on one portrait. We’ll begin with the drawing and composition, transfer the drawing to the canvas, then develop the portrait set in an imaginative landscape. To accomplish this, we’ll take inspiration from painters like Hans Memling and Leonardo da Vinci, paying careful attention to the play between the cool tones of the landscape and the warm tones of the flesh.

For the first time in over a year we’ll return to the nude figure, this time with the model Daniel. The focus of this class will be three-fold:
- Drawing of the figure.
- Using a limited palette. For those who dare: my palette will be: Mars Black, Lead White, Venetian Red, Juane Brilliant and Brown Ochre. We’ll start the painting on white canvas using Transparent Oxide Brown.
- Painting the flesh while thinking more about temperature than color.
Final note: I’d like each participant to bring with them a favorite painting of a male nude that might help serve as a point of reference.
