The Fundamentals – Drawing the Still-Life

Level: Beginner, Intermediate
Time: Tuesdays from 17:00 – 19:00.
Cost: €100 for 4 consecutive lessons.  Materials not included.

There is no reimbursement for absences, nor make-up lessons.

Course Description:

Using graphite as our medium and a still-life as our subject, this course focuses on:

  • Composition
  • Proportion Keys and Comparative Measuring
  • Value – Light and Shade
  • Texture

Required Materials:

  • Graphite Pencils: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Box Cutter Knife
  • Tiepolo paper, 50 x 70
  • Eraser
  • Masking Tape
  • Mini-eraser (optional)

Thursday Evenings

New: Figure Drawing—One Pose, 2 Hours—Instruction or Open Studio

Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Time: Thursdays from 17:00 – 19:00.
Cost: With instruction, the cost is €25 per lesson and one-time registration fee of €50 OR €30 per lesson and no registration fee.  Model fee included / Materials not included: materials may be provided for an additional €5.

The registration fee is non-refundable.

Please note: the registration fee guarantees your place at an easel for the duration of the course, with the understanding that you will be attending most if not all of the lessons.  If you miss two lessons straight, your place at the easel is forfeit.

NEW – Open Studio: If you are not interested in instruction but only wish to work from the model, you may do so for €15 for the two hours.

Course Description:

Join us for two hours every Thursday for a life drawing session of ONE pose for two hours.

This course focuses on a three-stage process to drawing the figure:

  • Gesture
  • “Boxing”
  • Light and Shade

Advanced Painting

Time: Saturdays from 11:00 – 14:00.
Cost: €40 per lesson and one-time registration fee of €50 OR €45 per lesson and no registration fee.  Model fee included / Materials not included.

Please note: the registration fee guarantees your place at an easel for the duration of the course, with the understanding that you will be attending most if not all of the lessons.  If you miss two lessons straight, your place at the easel is forfeit.

Recommended Materials:

  • Wood Palette
  • 1 Palette Knife
  • Linseed oil
  • Tintorsetto (this is a substitute for turpentine.  Normal solvents are NOT ALLOWED in the studio.)
  • Medium Cup or Jar
  • Brushes:
    • 3-4 Bull Hair (Sizes 6 to 10, Filbert)
    • 3-4 Wide Short-Handle Hog Bristle (Sizes 0 to 3)
    • 3-4 Synthetic Hair (Sizes 6 to 10, Various)
    • 3-4 Small Sable (0, 1, 2, 4)
  • Paper Towels
  • Wet Wipes
  • Paint Rag (an old T-shirt or pair of socks works great)
  • Linen Canvas. Recommended size: TBD.

Painting the Portrait in a Landscape

Level: Beginner, Intermediate
Time: Saturdays from 15:00 – 18:00.

Course Description:

Given the great success of this course in Fall 2017, we will replicate it also for the Spring session of 2018. The course will include some on-site sketches of the model IN the landscape.

This course focuses on:

  • Understanding the why and how of materials used in oil painting
  • Developing Composition
  • Comprehending the structure of the head and proportional relationships needed to achieve a likeness
  • Manipulating scumbles and glazes to manage atmosphere, volumes, and warm and cool temperature shifts.
