Shells, Scumbles, Skin and Glazes

The American painter Charles Weed flew in to Rome from Denmark to lead a 4-day workshop on painting shells and portraits from June 25th to the 28th, 2018.  Joining us for the workshop were Jim from Chicago, Amanda from Australia, Luca from Torino, Camilla from Calabria and Stefano from Rome.

The focus was on the precision of the drawing (with paint) and a construction of light intended to keep the value range of the painting in a high key.  By the end of the workshop—and thanks in large part to the use of cobalt siccative— everyone was able to begin experimenting with the use of glazes and scumbles.

Given the short time, the results speak for themselves.  My thanks to all who attended and special thanks, as always, to Charles.

Another workshop with Charles is planned for sometime in October, 2018.  If you would like to be notified as soon as it is announced, please sign up for our mailing list.

Cheers,

Tim
